Close to the heart of Cambridge’s Kendall Square, 450 Kendall is steps from many life science and high-tech companies and MIT. Completed in 2015 for BioMed Realty Trust, the building is a nexus for cutting-edge life science research and its financial backers. Within minutes of MIT’s scientific and business leaders, the location serves as both a place to collaborate and recruit new talent. The design fosters spontaneous interaction in the building’s many shared spaces and with the surrounding life sciences community. Architecturally, the building maximizes outside-inside connectivity and transparency as a symbolic commitment to the interactive, interdependent research community. The concept of breaking down traditional barriers is physically manifested by the use of glass walls that brings the energy of Kendall Square into the building and reciprocates by giving energy back to the neighborhood. This five-story building provides a ground-floor restaurant use that activates the neighborhood and park; and upper floors offer terraces that accentuate the connections to the open space, canal, and Charles River.
