When it opened in 1999, Arrowstreet’s design for the award-winning Providence Place Mall was the centerpiece of the Capital Center Development District. A block away from the Rhode Island State House, it was the largest building in Rhode Island, containing over 1.4 million retail square footage and more than 4,000 parking spaces, while straddling a river and existing Amtrak railway tracks. Almost two decades later, GGP engaged Arrowstreet to refresh the customer entry points, from curb to front door. Upgrades include all new vehicular garage entries, wayfinding signage, and the installation of a new smart-parking system for improved efficiency and an elevated customer experience. At the mall interior, we also converted the former J.C. Penney department store to smaller-format store layouts as well as additional parking.

The design of new gateway entrances at the vehicular entrances to the North and South parking decks provides a passage to a comprehensive wayfinding system within the parking decks that integrates with Park Assist digital parking guidance solution. A color-coding strategy was implemented to orient customers within the eight level parking facility and identify pedestrian retail entrances. Pedestrian entries have been washed in light and color to assure maximum visibility.
