MSBA Roundtable

We recently were invited to speak and present at a MSBA Designer Roundtable titled “The Educational Importance of Adjacencies for K-12: Beyond the Space Summary,” where we shared our design and experiences from our Kipp Academy Lynn and Conservatory Lab Charter School projects. We appreciated the joint collaboration with SMMA and the MSBA, and had a great forum for the…

Research Leads to Design

This is part II in a series on the design of the Logan Airport Central Parking Expansion. Please find part I here. Once the design team and Massport came to a consensus on the idea of the artful screen on the expansion of the Central Garage, it was time for the team to start thinking about how to make it…

Finding Inspiration at Logan Airport

Arrowstreet is currently installing a large kinetic wall on the new Logan Airport garage in East Boston (an expansion of the Central Parking garage). From the onset of the project, the design team worked with Massport to find ways to capitalize on the garage’s visibility and its proximity to the Hilton Hotel. The request for “screening” of the garage led…

The Long-Awaited Public Market is Here!

This morning, I took a walk through the new Boston Public Market, which is celebrating its grand opening today. I was especially excited to visit and see the finished product of a long-anticipated idea. Arrowstreet has a special connection with this location–back in the ’90s, we led a team of several local architects for the design of Parcel 7, which included this retail space,…

Watch the Kinetic Facade in Action

In East Boston, Arrowstreet has been working to deliver Massport an innovative and beautiful skin for the West Garage of Logan Airport. The design team has been working closely with Extech, out of Pittsburgh, on the 50,000 aluminum wind flappers which will show patterns of the wind across two façades of the new garage. We were excited to see a…

“Living with Water” Design Charrette at ABX

Yesterday at ABX, the “Living with Water” Design Charrette was held to kick off a companion Design Challenge for the Boston design community. Mayor Marty Walsh was on hand to announce the competition and to emphasize the city’s commitment to finding solutions to climate change and rising sea levels in our coastal communities. Hosted on the second anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, the charrette invited designers, community leaders, and government officials to reflect on the new policies implemented in New York City and to consider what we here in Boston can learn from them.

North Jetty Building Groundbreaking

The groundbreaking for the new cold storage building we are working on for Cargo Ventures – located in the Marine Industrial Park in the Seaport – will be held in the next two weeks. The 325,000-square-foot facility will provide refrigerated space tailored to the needs of each cold storage tenant. The rooftop will be a 110,000 SF greenhouse (the size of two football fields) for a yet-to-be-announced urban agriculture grower and will generate enough food to feed 7,000 people…

The Evolution of Kendall Square

Kendall Square is a very different place than it once was. While some may say that its less of a true downtown (like Central or Harvard Square) than it could have been, it has certainly been an economic and tax engine for the City of Cambridge. It also gets a little better every year, with added housing and retail and other interesting uses (although some of us still miss a bit of the grit and grime and, in particular, the old F&T diner)…

130 Cambridgepark Drive

Arrowstreet is designing a 220-unit residential building and 456-car garage in the Alewife Triangle District, convenient to the young professionals and families employed at the adjacent and surrounding office buildings. Organized around three intimate private courtyards, the building features one- and two-bedroom units, studios, and “innovation”-style micro-units. A striking, colorful metal panel creates a noticeable corner for the building, which is set back from the street. The adjacent garage features fabric panel “fins” jutting out perpendicular from the building to screen the garage from a side view and create a bright, bold identity.

Salem Fire Department Renovation

Recently, Kristen Barrow and I traveled to Salem for a project on the historic North Street Fire Station. Built in 1881, the fire station has seen some significant wear over the years, and the City of Salem is hoping to repair the station to its former state. We spent the day examining the building and taking field measurements for drawings…
