Newly acquired as part of BioMed Realty Trust’s campus near Kendall Square, this former iron foundry was in need of a transformation to accommodate the demands of today’s office/lab tenants. Arrowstreet is restoring the historic building’s exterior to its previous luster and is upgrading its interior into a flexible space to suit a variety of tenants.

Juxtaposed with new materials, such as steel, glass, and fiber cement, original wooden supports and brick walls are reminiscent of the building’s past. Arrowstreet’s design team and graphics department thoroughly researched the building’s history for the client, and created a graphic timeline installation to tell the story of a building whose history continues to change with time.

In addition, as part of the project scope, landscaping connects the building to the surrounding campus and neighboring retail/restaurants. The building’s renovation now creates a seamless visual transition between the high-tech area of Kendall Square and its surrounding residential neighborhood – reviving the once bustling foundry with contemporary energy.
