AST Iron Chefs Bring the Heat!
After what felt like a never-ending winter cold spell, Arrowstreet warmly welcomed the month of May this year with its annual Cinco De Mayo celebration and a Tex-Mex chili cook-off. Nine of our ardent chili makers competed in this year’s challenge with a wide array of sweet and spicy flavors, savory aromas, robust ingredients, and unmistakable presentations. Family and friends…

KIPP Academy Lynn Wins BBJ Award
It was announced today that Arrowstreet’s KIPP Academy Lynn project was awarded the 2013 Boston Business Journal’s Best in Boston Real Estate Award for “Community Impact.”
The award is recognition of the fantastic impact that the KIPP program has had on the lives of its students and their families. The new facility has allowed the KIPP program to expand their middle school program and extend the experience for their students through high school, with both the middle and high schools being combined in the new building.
Congratulations to the entire project team!
New Retail in White Plains, NY
On May 7th, our design team received the site plan approvals for a new retail project on Bloomingdale Road in White Plains, New York. Led by our fantastic new clients, Faros Properties and Caspi Development, we designed the building to work with the challenging topography of the site by placing all of the parking on top of a single floor of boutique retail shops. Our goal for the project has been to provide a pedestrian-driven shopping center with an outdoor sidewalk bustling with window-shoppers, café seating, and lush landscaping. An existing office building on the site was the former headquarters for Nestle, and is now home to several private and government offices. The new parking garage will serve the offices as well as new retail shops. The Common Council of White Plains approved the project unanimously!
Stay tuned for updates. We’re working on the retail marketing campaign now, and construction will start soon.
Four Season Commuting
With the onset of spring, many people focus their attention on spending more time outdoors. A popular choice is cycling, particularly here in New England which has a strong history of mountain biking and road riding. I’d like to share some advice about combining a few passions many of us share – as my son says, “saving the world”, exercise, and something we all need to do: commuting to work…
Do People Actually Shop in Stores?
(Part 2 in a series – Magic Beans)
The use of mobile devices to make purchases is still a small fraction of the total sales in the e-commerce world. But it’s rising. Per the New York Times, “last year, people spent $25 billion on purchases made from phones and tablets,” and that’s an increase of 81 percent over the previous year. I was curious how that affected my retail clients, so I reached out to them. This post is the second in a short series of responses. My questions were: how does mobile spending affect your retail business? What about show-rooming? How do you either fight it or work with it…
101 Main Street
Arrowstreet recently designed Biomed’s new Cambridge offices. The 9,300 square foot space on the 16th floor at 101 Main St. features a display wall spine that curves through the space with interactive large screen and pin-up displays of current projects. The wall draws visitors past conference rooms that overlook Biomed projects in Boston and Cambridge. Other features include a central café bar, open and visually transparent work spaces, and exposed ceilings with acoustic treatment. The project was a great team effort, with construction by Moriarty.
The Greatest Party on Earth
Our client, Artists for Humanity, throws an amazing fundraiser every year in their headquarters facility, the EpiCenter, which Arrowstreet designed. In addition to being for a great cause, the spectacular event exhibits the work of a talent group of artists – from the paintings, to the break dancer,s to the decor, to the trapeze artists, to the food. These photos should give you a glimpse of what it’s like – hope to see you there next year.
Library Design at Fenway High School
We’re currently working with Fenway High School to renovate an existing school building for their program, including a sizable library. This created a challenge for us, as the existing building layout is long and narrow, with a central hallway – not ideal for a library space. Our solution was to utilize the wide hallway to create a unique cross-corridor library with a central reading room and circulation spine…
