Squantum School is a net zero carbon elementary school and community resource that will serve as a Resilience Hub for the Squantum neighborhood.
It is a passive building utilizing Phius as the passive house certification body. It will be the first Phius certified public school. Passive buildings employ design strategies such as an air-tight and thermally enhanced envelope, optimized orientation and control of solar gains/losses, as well as energy recovery ventilation, in order to result in a low energy building. Benefits include healthy indoor air quality, resilience, and low operational costs. Arrowstreet incorporates passive building strategies in all of its projects. This combined with heat pump systems and renewables are the key to reaching net zero.
Squantum School is an all-electric building featuring a ground source heat pump system, heat pump hot water, and displacement ventilation with demand control.
Low embodied carbon is a key project element utilizing the following strategies:
- Reuse of a portion of the existing 1917 building
- Mass timber construction in the media center
- Low carbon materials used for concrete, floor finishes, insulation, and cladding
