Volunteering with GADoS 2015

Over the weekend, a team of Arrowstreet staff members brought along family and friends to participate in the Green Apple Day of Service. Like last year, the group volunteered at an Arrowstreet-designed school building — this time we served at the Kipp Academy in Lynn, a building completed in 2012. We were able to take advantage of the beautiful fall weather…

LEED and Beyond

We recently announced that our office in Post Office Square was certified LEED Gold. It was exciting to practice what we’ve preached for so long, and to have our “home” declared a sustainable place is a point of pride. Our thoughts are also on spreading sustainability on a national level, especially with the retail development community. Back in November, I…

The Long-Awaited Public Market is Here!

This morning, I took a walk through the new Boston Public Market, which is celebrating its grand opening today. I was especially excited to visit and see the finished product of a long-anticipated idea. Arrowstreet has a special connection with this location–back in the ’90s, we led a team of several local architects for the design of Parcel 7, which included this retail space,…

“Swing Time” at The Lawn on D

Last week, my colleague, Rachel and I ventured over to check out the interactive art display, “Swing Time,” at the Lawn on D in South Boston. If you haven’t been over to check out the piece, I encourage you to do so before it disappears on October 31!

Public Sound Installation

Through the end of this week (Friday), there is a striking public art installation of light, glass and sounds emanating from a storage unit standing at the edge of the sidewalk at 1140 Boylston Street. Created by a Berklee Student, it captures the sounds of abandoned MBTA tunnels. For those of us working in the Financial District, it may be…

Our Studio’s Functional Art

As part of our furniture acquisition for our new office, we decided to incorporate a bit of our culture, our sketches, and our connection to a special client…all while creating functional, one-of-a-kind furniture for our kitchen café…

1550 Main Street Lauded by BOMA Mid-Atlantic

1550 Main Street, designed by Arrowstreet, was awarded The Outstanding Building of the Year distinction by the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) for the second consecutive year in a row. The former federal office building, owned MassDevelopment, was renovated as part of a strategy to help revitalize downtown Springfield, MA. Working together with MassDevelopment and the City of Springfield, Arrowstreet designed a comprehensive package of exterior and interior building renovations to convert the building into Class-A commercial offices with ground floor retail uses. In addition, Arrowstreet redesigned the central plaza to improve circulation and its position as a meeting place on Main Street.

Collaborative Environments: Past and Future

My son went to visit Battleship Cove in Fall River with his Boy Scout Troop and we all had a chance to spend the night on the USS Massachusetts. It was quite an adventure and a lot of fun to explore. As a “Navy Brat” myself, it brought back memories visiting the ship where my dad used to serve. He was a lithographer, and as part of his shop, there was a small drafting and design contingent. The group was particularly useful when needing to come up with a quick design for a repair, especially while out to sea on a Destroyer or Submarine Tender. Sketches and plans would then be conveyed to a foundry floating in the middle of the ocean…

TedxSomerville: Movement

Recently in Somerville, TED’s “Ideas Worth Spreading,” were in full motion, with a local twist! Located at the Arrowstreet-designed Brooklyn Boulders rock climbing gym, TEDxSomerville’s Movement-themed event was a 6-hour long series of talks and performances by local community members. Aptly located, the event centered around the theme of “motion” – from physical to mental and individual to communal.
