Conservatory Lab Charter School

Conservatory Lab Charter School (CLCS) is a tuition-free public charter school serving grades K-8 located in the Boston neighborhood of Dorchester. CLCS’s mission is to empower a diverse range of children as scholars, artists, and leaders through rigorous academic and music education inspired by El Sistema & Expeditionary Learning. In collaboration with Arrowstreet’s architectural team, our Graphic Design Studio developed interior and exterior identification signage, donor signage, and environmental graphics.

The environmental graphics feature oversized instruments reflective of the school’s music education. The graphics anchor key gathering areas throughout the school and are paired with inspirational quotes ranging from the program’s founder to Bruno Mars.

A three-dimensional wall in the main reception area features the school’s motto, “We are crew, not passengers.” Student artwork will surround the motto, reinforcing the message while activating the three-dimensional wall. The installation not only provides a dramatic welcome to visitors to the school, but is also visible to passers-by, giving them a glimpse into the school’s culture.

The hallway outside of the Main Ensemble Room is dedicated to the scholars and the hours they devote to practicing their music. It features duo-tone images of scholars playing instruments, either in practice or performance.

The environmental graphics present a visual representation of the school’s mission and culture, while also providing a colorful, engaging, and inspiring environment for scholars, faculty, and staff.
