The first remote airport terminal in the United States, designed by Arrowstreet for the Massachusetts Port Authority

Since June 2026, travelers flying out of Boston Logan International Airport have been able to check in, drop their bags, and clear TSA security screening in Framingham, about 20 miles away. The Framingham Remote Terminal is a pilot program by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) at its Logan Express site off Route 9 in MetroWest. It is the first facility of its kind in the United States.

How it works
Delta and JetBlue passengers park at the Framingham Logan Express lot and check in for their flights. Checked bags are tagged and sent directly to their plane, so travelers don’t handle them again until they reach their destination. After TSA screening on site, passengers ride a secure bus that travels straight to the airside at Logan and drops them beyond the security checkpoint, so they can walk directly to their gate.

Why Massport built it
Framingham is the busiest location in the Logan Express network, and Logan’s roadways, curbsides, and security checkpoints face growing demand. The remote terminal tests a new model for regional airport access. Passengers complete the departure process closer to home, which shifts trips onto shared transportation and reduces congestion at the airport.

“The Remote Terminal pilot program is part of Massport’s broader vision to reimagine the travel experience and make the passenger journey more seamless, connected, and efficient,” said Rich Davey, CEO of Massport. “Passengers in and around MetroWest now have a new, low-stress way to reach Boston Logan. Imagine arriving at the airport having already checked in and cleared security and then being dropped off just steps from your gate. This is the kind of stress-free process we’re working to make a reality for everyone.”

What passengers are saying
The pilot was planned to run for three months. Strong demand led Massport to extend it through at least March 2027, and more than 25,000 passengers have used it since opening. In post-trip surveys, riders describe the experience as easier and far less stressful than starting at the airport:

“This was the best airport experience I ever had and should be the flagship program for the entire country.”

“I travel with my 88-year-old father yearly, and this was the first time he wasn’t tired by the time we got to our gate.”

“Parked the car, walked one minute to check-in, TSA, and the bus. Topnotch security. America needs more of these remote terminals.”

The secure bus has achieved nearly 100% on-time arrival at Logan, and passengers have made their onward flight connections at a rate above 99%.

Arrowstreet’s role
Arrowstreet designed the purpose-built terminal on a tightly constrained site, bounded by existing curb infrastructure, a power easement, and municipal borders. Check-in, bag drop, TSA screening, and secure bus boarding all fit within a compact footprint arranged as a clear, linear sequence. Because the pilot informs future sites, the experience was developed to be easily understandable to first-time users and replicable at other locations.

What’s next
Lessons from Framingham are shaping Massport’s first permanent remote terminal, the Arrowstreet-designed Braintree Logan Express and Remote Terminal, which celebrates its groundbreaking in October 2026.
