Brooke Charter School, a network on the leading edge of successful charter schools in Massachusetts, commissioned Arrowstreet to create a new home for their second school. Planned to support 475 students in grades K-8, Brooke Mattapan includes the renovation of an existing four-story historic building and gymnasium. The modernization of this 57,000-square-foot building included substantial interior rehabilitation, restoration of the historic façade, and the addition of a new stairwell and elevator for improved accessibility and circulation. A thoughtful rearrangement of existing space accommodates their school program – which includes art, dance, music, science, gymnasium, and library components – into a compact footprint while preserving the large amount of open green space on the site. The school was designed to be LEED certifiable, with an innovative low-energy air conditioning system that uses a combination of dehumidification and ceiling fans.
