New Photography at KIPP Academy Lynn

We’re happy to share this new photography of the new KIPP Academy Lynn, which just opened for the 2012 school year. Working with the dedicated staff at KIPP was a unique experience: the school is one of a network of charter schools across the country that follow a rigorous academic program that focuses on getting their students into and through college, and on developing character right alongside educational goals. The program has been very successful – 89% of the most recent class matriculated to college compared to 41% of their underprivileged peers nationwide…

Excel Academy Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

October 3rd was a great day at Excel Academy Charter School’s East Boston campus. I attended their ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the completion of the project and, while it was drizzling and dreary outside, the sun was clearly shining in their newly completed addition. Packed full of students, faculty, board members, and public officials, energy and excitement filled the room…

Revere Bridge Update

I was on site in Revere last week at our Waterfront Square project and can happily report that the pylons have gone up for the pedestrian bridge that will connect the beach to mass transit and parking. The walking surface is under construction with the steel span expected to be complete this week. The stairs from the west are in place and paver installation is ongoing on the plaza…

Visiting Worcester’s CitySquare

I wanted to share a few construction photos from the Arrowstreet-designed Unum Headquarters building in Worcester. Part of the CitySquare development we have been master planning and designing, the Unum building (One Mercantile Square) will open this fall. It’s great to see this striking building set against the sky as I pass the DCU Center every site visit. We all look forward to seeing this building complete and the rest of CitySquare coming together!

KIPP Academy Lynn Opens

I was able to be present at the KIPP Academy Lynn’s first day of school in their new Arrowstreet-designed facility. Enthusiasm was high among teachers and staff about the new school and start of the school year; the students, while appreciative of the building, weren’t quite ready for summer to be over. We plan on taking professional photography in the next few weeks, but until then, we hope you enjoy these photos of the finished school building.

Chestnut Hill Site Visit

This past week I was able to join an Arrowstreet group to get a tour of the Chestnut Hill site from Jason King and Mike Manship. The project has had a long history in the office but I’ve only recently joined the team, working on the 350+ space pre-cast garage scheduled to open in the fall of 2013. In addition to…

Student Tours at KIPP Academy Lynn

Over the past few months Matt Rice and I have had the opportunity to give the 7th, 8th and 9th grade students of KIPP Academy Lynn a tour of their new school, which is currently under construction, and speak with them about the role of an architect in this  project. We teamed together with the Consigli, the building contractor, to walk them around the site and share information about the building and process. It was a fun experience for all involved. The students had great questions and the excitement they had for their new space was apparent. The new KIPP Academy Lynn building is scheduled to open for the start of the 2012 school year…

Worcester CitySquare: Rising from the Dust of Demolition

We’re happy to share these recent construction photos of the CitySquare development in downtown Worcester. Arrowstreet has been working on the planning and design of the mixed-use development which will create a revitalized neighborhood and reintroduce retail and entertainment to Worcester’s downtown. The first building to be built in this development is One Mercantile Place, a 200,000 square foot office building that will consolidate Unum’s Worcester offices. Construction is tearing along, and we are on track for a October 2012 completion.

Speaking at NCMA

I recently presented on the topic of Green Procurement at the regional National Contract Management Association (NCMA) conference and workshops. The NCMA is a professional association for those in the field of procurement and contract management. While I often speak about sustainable design, the U. S. Green Building Council and the LEED rating systems to groups in the world of real estate development, building design and construction, but the invitation to speak at this workshop presented an opportunity to talk to a different audience, one that is focused on purchasing products and services. A majority of the attendees were from military and government agencies and companies that contract with them…

Visiting Waterfront Square and KIPP Academy Lynn

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the site of two of our projects currently in construction: the Waterfront Square at Revere Beach parking garage and KIPP Academy Lynn Charter School. Our first stop was the Revere Beach parking garage. We started this tour walking through the bus access way to the main lobby, and then continued up the main…
