Visiting India, Part 3 of 3

Srinagar, though only a 90-minute flight from sweltering Delhi, was a place apart. Surrounded by tall mountains and dominated by a beautiful lake, it was forty degrees cooler. We sat by a warm fire in our host’s home the evening I arrived. It seemed more like New England than India…

Visiting India, Part 2 of 3

One of the initial and lasting impressions of urban India involved the mixed-modes of transportation one encounters on the roadways. In general, the typical three-lane road seemed to function in reality with five lanes flowing smoothly amid a cacophony of horns that signaled the intentions of drivers more effectively than blinking directionals…

Visiting India, Part 1 of 3

Arrowstreet sent me to India earlier this year to rekindle ties with a colleague. Saurabh Bagley & Associates (SMBA) is a firm in New Delhi doing a significant volume of work. Mr. Bagley had worked at Arrowstreet during his time as a graduate student at MIT. After his return to India, Arrowstreet teamed up with SMBA on a few commercial projects, but we hadn’t had a chance to work together in a few years. So, I went to meet with Saurabh and see his firm’s work, prospective clients and a country about which I knew little. The impressions I was left with were, in general…

Best of 2013 Awards

I recently attended the Banker & Tradesman ceremony honoring their Best of 2013 awards recipients. Arrowstreet was voted Gold this year in an open poll among B&T’s readers in the Architect / Design category. It was a nice evening, with a great venue – Sean, Amy, and I enjoyed views across the Charles River to downtown Boston.

I feel that having connections with the larger community strengthens my ability to connect with the people who interact with our buildings every day. Many of the projects I work on are schools, so I particularly enjoy working with students and…

BAC Graduation

On May 24th David Burn and I graduated from the Boston Architectural College as part of a 148 student graduating class. We proudly participated in a BAC tradition walking in full regalia from 320 Newbury Street (the main BAC building) to the commencement ceremony at Old South Church in Copley Square, accompanied by a Dixie land band. It must have been quite a sight, judging from the looks on bystanders’ faces! The commencement ceremony itself was a great celebration. There was a pleasantly personal feel and focus on the students by the president of the school, Ted Landsmark, and an interesting commencement address from Architect of the Capital, Stephen Ayers…

BAC Graduates

This spring, Arrowstreet is the home of not one but two new graduates of the Boston Architectural College (BAC). Both David Burn and Matt Byrnes-Jacobsen completed their long and winding journey through the BAC, and for some reason they are both now incredibly relaxed and carefree…
