Summer Bowling with Arrowstreet
This summer, we celebrated our second annual Flatbread Bowling tournament at the Flatbread Company at Sacco’s Bowl Haven. Over the course of eight weeks, our league of extraordinary Arrowstreet’ers enjoyed candlepin bowling paired with delicious flatbread pizza. The score was close again this year, but Team A-I ended the season victorious over Team J-Z. It was a fun way to enjoy the summer; we’re all curious as to where near Post Office Square we might be able to continue the tradition next year!
Celebrating the Year Together at The Andover Inn
I always look forward to celebrating the year with my fellow Arrowstreeters and at our annual end of the year Holiday Party that I help plan. Joined by family and friends, we had the pleasure this year of getting together in style at the Andover Inn (where Arrowstreet recently completed renovations). Delicious food along with charming company made the evening one of a kind. This year instead of having our usual “arts & crafts” area for the kids, we selected (with their parents’ help!) a game or activity that we knew they would enjoy. It was so much fun watching them find and unwrap their entertaining gifts. The children also had an ice cream sundae bar that several of us were envying all night. As always, it was a wonderful way for the Arrowstreet family to bring the year to a close.
Casino Bowl
It’s not easy coming up with a different theme to Arrowstreet’s annual Bowling Tournament each year, but somehow we continue to do it. This year we took a gamble with the Casino Bowl and decked out Lanes & Games with pillars of casino chips and an inflatable slot machine to set the scene. “Pit manager” Kathie greeted everyone arriving with lucky dice necklaces and casino chips while I as the “pit boss” invited everyone to try their luck playing a game of spin & win…
Summer Food Drive
When we received a call from our long-time community involvement contact Susan Walsh that the Somerville Homeless Coalition was in great need of food, the Arrowstreet crew launched a summer food donation drive. Our team donated a wide variety of nutritious and delicious non-perishable food, which we then packed into reusable shopping bags and donated to the Somerville Homeless Coalition’s Project Soup. Project Soup, New England’s first free dinner program, helps provide monthly groceries to elderly and disabled people in Somerville and Cambridge. We are all glad to help this wonderful local charity in its mission to serve those in need in our community.
How We Celebrate Red Sox Opening Day: Fighting Cancer & Eating Ice Cream
We celebrated Red Sox Opening Day on April 13th by getting together to make our own ice cream sundaes complete with all the fixin’s and a cherry on top while watching the home opener against the Tampa Bay Rays. We also teamed up with the Jimmy Fund by creating our own Rally Team, The Arrowstreet Sox, to raise $85 to help support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber in their effort to provide hope to adults and children being treated for cancer worldwide. A few of us were even lucky enough to see (and hear!) the formation of four F-16 Fighter Jets fly by our office on their way to Fenway Park, but we weren’t fast enough to snap a photo. Go Sox!
Two Goats & Some Red Envelopes
Who knew Doppelbock translates into “double goat”? On the first day of the 2012 Chinese New Year, a group of Arrowstreeters discovered this fact as we attended a beer tasting together at our local Not Your Average Joe’s. We sampled a Doppelbock-style beer called Fisherman’s Navigator, brewed by Massachusett’s own Cape Ann Brewing Co, and celebrated the start of the Chinese New Year by handing out lucky red envelopes. Traditionally given out during the Lunar New Year, each envelope contained dollar bills- but the luckiest of us, David Flajnik, found a $25 gift certificate to Changsho, a favorite buffet restaurant, in his red envelope. Stephanie and I each took home a Navigator pint glass to remember the evening; good drinks, good food, and good times were enjoyed by all.
Giving Back
With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season in full swing, Arrowstreet always strives to make time to give back to our community. During the month of November we sponsor a Turkey Drive to benefit the students of The Next Wave / Full Circle and Argenziano Schools in Somerville. We love reading the thank-you letters sent to us by the students after Thanksgiving – they touch our hearts…
Arrowstreet’s Annual Holiday Party
As the calendar turns to the latter half of December, Arrowstreet hosts its annual Holiday Party at the office. The party this year was quite the success with the whole Arrowstreet family- including spouses, children, and a few Arrowstreet “alumni” and friends who stopped by to enjoy delicious foods and spirits. The children had their own room set up with arts and crafts, games, movies, and kid-friendly dinner. Computers throughout the office displayed photos from the year’s events, site visits, and office outings while people strolled around the space chatting, catching up, and sampling the tasty morsels being served…
Pumpkin Design Contest
On Friday, October 28th Arrowstreeters showcased their design, carving, and decorating skills at our 4th annual Pumpkin Design Contest. We had a variety of entries in this year’s contest, including a Transformkin complete with drywall screws (Matt Rice); a traditional Halloween bat carving (Greg Triplett); a wide-eyed, floppy-eared dog named Spot (Mike Conlan); a cannibalistic pumpkin dripping candy corn (Stephanie Tyll and Lama Bitar); and pumpkin carved like an Oak tree with a “tire” swing (Lauren Haggerty)…
Back to School
I used to despise back-to-school shopping when I was a kid. I wonder why I was so excited when the opportunity presented itself this year; maybe it had to do with the fact that I wasn’t going back to school myself, just doing the shopping! …
